At the center of the case was Michael O'Shea, principle teacher at Fanore National School in north Clare, who was dismissed from his post in 1914, by the school manager, the parish priest, allegedly for refusing to marry the assistant teacher in his school. O'Shea himself being engaged to another girl at the time. This book discusses the case along with the extreme methods used by his supporters to intimidate the new teachers who succeeded him, and the bitter divisions caused in the community by the affair.
