Michael Farrell's book was one of the first detailed full length histories on the Northern Irish state as a political unit, - how the state was formed in a period of immense internal and civil torment in the 1920's , how the state went on to become a sectarian and deeply divided entity - politically and religiously - from the outset.
Farrell, a socialist nationalist, was a founder of the People's Democracy movement, and was a key organiser of the Belfast to Derry march in January 1969 which was a key flashpoint in the evolution of the Troubles.
