First published in 1972 ( as part of the wider Gill History of Ireland Series) covering the periods of the 13th and 14th century This revised 2nd edition , 2003 giving overviews of society and institutions of Gaelic Ireland, as well as an examination of the history of all four provinces and the expanding pale during the period. Most of the book was based on original research, and was one of the first modern academic studies of the period, and thus an important work of historical research.
This edition was completely revised and enlarged in the light of research, by the author and other scholars, carried out on the subject in the intervening period. New information on late Irish law and the institutions of the autonomous lordships is added, as well as illustrative matter.
