This is the story of Fine Gael in the 1980's , and the transformation of the party under the leadership of Garret Fitzgerald, from a rather staid conservative party with a rural ' big farmer' base, to one that sought constitutional change ', modernisation on a whole host of issues, and was involved in the ground breaking Anglo Irish Agreement with Margaret Thatcher's Conservatives. The polotics of the early 1980's were full of turmoil, as events internally ( in both FG and FF , and externally - The Troubles, the Hunger strikes, global recession- impacted the Irish body politic.
