A paperback booklet guide ( 40 pages, illustrated , stapled pamphlet format) detailing the history and buildings on Inis Cealtra ( also known as Holy Island ) on Lough Derg on the Shannon - ( not to be confused with Sanctuary Island or Station Island also on the other northern Lough Derg )
One of Ireland's lesser known gems , the island, now uninhabited , is situated off the town of Scariff/Mountshannon in Lough Derg, upstream on the Shannon from Killaloe.
The remains of several churches, a round tower, graveyards, and many important early christian buildings are located on the island which is set among some of the most beautiful lake scenery in ireland.
Holy Island on Lough Derg and the river Shannon is one of the most famous monastic sites in Ireland. Its many attractions include a well-preserved Round Tower, the ruins of six churches, a Holy Well, a unique graveyard with slabs dating from the eight century, Bullaun Stones, a cell like structure, which is one of the most extraordinary buildings in Ireland and a ‘bargaining’ stone where many a marriage was brokered. Their secluded position has enabled them to survive in a wonderful state of preservation.
In March 2010, Holy Island was recognised as one of the foremost monastic sites in Ireland and added to a list of properties submitted to UNESCO for future nomination to the World Heritage List ( The above taken from www.holyisland.ie )
