In addition, the book contains the full transcript of ten personal letters of John Keegan to John Daly, a Dublin-based bookseller, which were written in 1846. Published in this book also are two letters of John Keegan to Dolman's Magazine written in 1845 in defence of Irish priests who were, at that time, the subject of adverse publicity in sections of the English press. These letters give an interesting account of the role of the priest in baptism, marriage and funeral ceremonies in the middle of the nineteenth century.
