The quotations included range from the fifth century to the present and from the classical to the colloquial. There are over 150 authors - from St Brigid to Sinead O'Connor. Yeats and Swift are quoted here, along with Wilde and Joyce. So too are Maria Edgeworth and Mary Levin, Robert Emmet and Roger Casement; Douglas Hyde and Mary Robinson; Sean Hughes and Neil Jordan. The emphasis of the book is on accessibility, the quotations are grouped under subject headings, with an author index as well as a first line index.
