This is a chronological, retrospective survey on the architectural achievements to be found in Ireland. In a series of essays, the influences of Irish literature, politics and national identity on the country's 20th century architecture is examined, as well as housing, town planning and ecclesiastical architecture, and the relationship between building and landscape. Over 50 buildings are presented in detail. These include the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast, and Dublin Airport.
The book was published by Prestel to coincide with a major exhibition devoted to 20th century Irish architecture in 1996 at the Deutsches Architektur-Museum, Frankfurt.
