The Silence by Susan Allot
I finished this book tonight and I’m not sure how I feel about it. The story starts with Isla, who’s living in London and receives a phone call from her father in Australia who says he’s being investigated as a suspect in the disappearance of their neighbour Mandy. It was assumed she moved away 30 years ago but is now being investigated as a crime. The story then evolves with dual storylines from 1967 and 1997. A slow burn which didn’t really have a mystery feel to it, rather a story of systemic dysfunction and the inter-generational effect of secrecy compounded by alcoholism. I found it a difficult read as it was quite depressing. There’s also a subplot around the removal of Aboriginal babies from their families and being placed into care which I didn’t know a huge amount about. It did give an insight into the racism of the time towards indigenous people. I wasn’t really sure how to rate this book as I didn’t feel good after reading it. In the end I gave it 3.5 ⭐️
