The Ghost Dance was a millennial cult thta swept through many Native American groups and tribes in the American West and the Plains at the end of the 19th century. Irish American James Mooney was sent by the Bureau of American Ethnology to investigate this quasi religious movement ( which was itself a resposnse to the huge cultural change and decimation of Native Americans since 1850)
The report he produced stands as a model of careful observation and interpretation.
