It is June, 1947. The transatlantic liner Carmelia steams towards New York. Few of her passengers are untouched by the long years of war. Among the passengers are Reginald Parkes, an Intelligence officer, and his 16-year-old son, Cato, whose life depends on the skills of surgeons in New York. Cato discovers he is not alone in his intimacy with death.
