The author is an Icelandic writer and this is an anthology of his own favourite quotes/sayings about the several stages of a man’s life, from conception to death. So what can one say about something like this except to share what also liked? Here are some I’ve picked:
SCHOOL - “The supreme end of education is expert discernment in all things—the power to tell the good from the bad, the genuine from the counterfeit, and to prefer the good and genuine to the bad and the counterfeit.” (Samuel Johnson)
TEENAGE - “Adolescence: a stage between infancy and adultery.” (Anon)
YOUTH - “I remember my youth and the feeling that will never come back any more—the feeling that I could last for ever, outlast the sea, the earth, and all men; the deceitful feeling that lures us on to joys, to perils, to love, to vain effort—to death; the triumphant conviction of strength, the heat of life in the handful of dust, the glow in the heart that with every year grows dim, grows cold, grows small, and expires—and expires, too soon, too soon—before death itself.” (Joseph Conrad)
“Youth is the time to go flashing from one end of the world to the other both in mind and body; to try the manners of different nations; to hear the chimes at midnight; to see sunrise in town and country; to be converted at a revival; to circumnavigate the metaphysics, write halting verses, run a mile to see a fire, and wait all day long in the theatre to applaud ‘Hernani’.” (Robert Louise Stevenson)
