In April 1919 in the city of Limerick, IRA volunteer Robert Byrne is shot in his hospital bed by the RIC during a rescue attempt. He had been on hunger strike for his rights as a political prisoner. Shortly after the rescue he died from the gunshot. Little did Britain know that his killing would inspire Irish republicans and trade unionists to unite in a campaigh to take back the city from the British Empire, in the events that beacme known as the Limerick Soviet.
