''The aim of this series of booklets is to give a broad, informed survey of Irish life and culture, past and present. Each writer is left free to deal with his subject in his own way and the views expressed in any booklet are not necessarily those of the Committee. Robert Lloyd Praeger is best known as a botanist but his earliest researches were on the geology of the north-east of Ireland and he took an active part in many archaeological excavations. In addition to his scientific papers be has written guide-books, essays and an autobiographical work of outstanding interest. His long and active life as a field-worker has given him an unrivalled knowledge of the Irish countryside'' Cover design by Patrick Scott.
