San Jose is a city located in Northern California fifty miles south of San Francisco. While San Jose is often regarded as a “bedroom community” it has grown from a farming environment to become the heart of the high tech “Silicon Valley”. The metropolitan “Bay Area” is a homogenous metropolis of approximately ten million souls. The Bay Area is comprised of the North Bay, the East Bay, South Bay and the Peninsula with a large body of water, the San Francisco Bay directly in the middle. San Jose lays at the hub of this urban center connecting the South Bay to the peninsula and East Bay― a teeming multicultural melting pot with close economic, cultural and kindred ties to both the Orient and Latin America.
In the South Bay, San Jose’s posh, urbane modernity comes to an abrupt end at the redwood forest separating her from the Pacific coast. Within the dense primeval woods between San Jose and the ocean is a wilderness of giant woodlands and lush undergrowth teeming with wildlife, antediluvian flora and dopers. Hidden in the forests remote density, away from the watchful eyes of the San Jose Police Department drug users, suppliers and manufacturers thrive in an environment of virtual nihilistic lawlessness.
Because of its location and diverse denizens San Jose has become the gateway for the distribution of the illicit heroin and cocaine from Mexico and South America, for the opiates and hashish from the Orient and for the hallucinogenics and stimulants produced by the local chemists who populate the secluded forests of the coast mountain range.
It was into this invisible underworld of iniquitous depraved criminality that a young San Jose Police Officer was immersed in a first ever attempt to identify, infiltrate and build prosecutable criminal cases against the facilitators and promoters of the industry of illegal drug distribution. Sumner looked like a naive, fresh faced kid; a fact that aided his descent into the Northern California high school drug culture. Unlike Audie Murphy who lied about his age and subsequently became a warrior, Sumner was a battle hardened veteran, much older and wiser than his very youthful appearance.
It was during these investigations that undercover officer Ted Sumner walked through the dark, demonic world of outlaw drug addicts and pushers, befriending and trafficking with criminals from the street level dealer to the kingpins of syndicates with international connections. Working alone and unaided in a capacity of deep undercover, Sumner faded into the shadowy purgatory of drugs and crime meticulously building case after case that brought to justice hundreds of dealers and wrecked and dismantled dozens of narcotic distribution organizations.
It has been stated that police work is comprised of days and months of tedious routine interspersed with moments of stark terror. Sumner’s career was anything but routine. Real life police work is sometimes messy and often repetitive. There are no neat story lines that lead from episode to episode. There are only the realities of dealing with the never ending challenges presented by that most dangerous of predators, the human criminal.
