The history of Trade Unionism in Ireland is interwoven with the political history of the country - Daniel O'connell was an enemy of trde unions, while Michael Davitt, himself a former mill worker, was a promoter of Trade Unionism. Irish trade unionist agaitated for union recognition in England, ( the leader of the chartists was an Irishman, Fergus O'Connor) , and John Doherty from Donegal was a pioneering union leader in Manchester. Jim Larkin and his struggles in Dublin during the Lockout became known worldwide.
