Very Good. 1937 Paperback ( published November 1936) . A Very Good copy in a FAIR to good cover - the covers show edgewear , and dustmarking, sabout a 2 cm loss of external papers over teh binding at base of spine. All the earlier Capuchin annuals were deliberately printed with covers slightly oversized, meaning that creasing was inevitable . The same image was used on all the editions, artwork by Sean O'Sullivan.
The Capuchin Annual was published in Dublin from 1930 through 1977. Although its readership was by and large Irish, its circulation was international as it was frequently sent to Irish expatriates and members of the Capuchin community abroad. It is a journal unique in Irish publishing-although its ethos always remained the promotion of and education in Christian values and a Catholic way of life, it found many unique ways of exploring these subjects. From its conception, successive editors, beginning with Father Senan Moynihan , it maintained a very high quality of contributions. Many Irish writers, artists, and educators who later rose to prominence (such as Michael Bowles, Benedict Kiley, Francis Macmanus and Augustine Martin) often received their first opportunities to publish with The Annual). The Annual was always published on high-quality glossy paper, making reproductions of art works as good as one would expect in a journal of the fine arts. It was also very hefty-each volume was around 500 pages, and each bore the same cover design by Sean O'Sullivan.
Also of interest for a large number of vintage advertisements and ad illustration - many for businesses that still exist.
This edition includes a number of full colour reproductions of Irish art and painting by Sean O'Sullivan RHA (19 illustrations of his work , 8 of which are tipped in) as well as features on local history ( Donegal author Seumas MacManus), church missions in Rhodesia and the Capuchins in the USA, tours and photographs of provincial Ireland, and the usual wealth of period advertisements. It also has a large section of articles photos and features on Matthew Talbot
