This anthology is a mixture of superstition, true ghost stories and fiction - all with a Celtic theme. Many of the great ghost story writers represented here were Scottish or Irish: R L Stevenson, Sir Walter Scott, J S LeFanu, Lord Dunsany and Arthur Machen, and their stories are peopled with hostile spirits: with dwarves and banshees, selkies (people who cast off their human shape to go gamboling in the sea) and witches, set against mountains where the mists can descend without warning and seas harbouring unimaginable horrors.
