OVERVIEW: A book on extraterrestrial intelligence was rare in the 1960s, and this one was sensational in its scope, erudition and the advanced way it treated its topics. In spite of that, what would have been an obvious five-star book in 1966 has now somewhat dated.
This book was the remarkable result of a remote collaboration between Iosif Shklovskii in the USSR and Carl Sagan in the US. It is possible to tell who wrote what, because Sagan's contributions are marked by little triangles, but in any case there are no jarring discontinuities or ideological disputes.
