Geoffrey Keating was a 17th century Roman Catholic priest, poet and historian from County Tipperary. Here, selections from his major work, the `History of Ireland' or `Foras Feasa ar Eirinn', are presented by the early 20th century Irish language scholar Osborn Bergin. The original work, completed in 1634, traces the history of Ireland from the earliest times to the invasion of the Normans in the 12th century, using historical poetry, annals and ecclesiastical records. Bergin presents extracts from the romantic stories with an introduction, notes and vocabulary.
The text is in middle Irish ( or Meán Ghaeilge ) and is aimed at an acdemic or third level readership .
This is a reprint ( 2010) of the third edition, originally published ( in this edition) 1996, and based on the original edition of 1909. With glossary and vocabulary. Notes are bilingual , but the original text is in Mean Ghaeilge only - ie there is no side by side translation to Modern Irish OR to English.
