MacGill was born near Glenties , County Donegal, in 1890, and had been a spalpeen and tatie hooker ( potato picker) in Scotland from the age of 15. He later served as a journalist, and also spent time on the Western Front during WW1.
Although fiction, this is also an autobiographical work, based on his own experiences and what he witnessed in Glasgow.
