Written in the 18th century, these poems have exercised an enduring fascination with Ireland and abroad. It is over one thousand lines long and full of the most intricate technical brilliance and musical mastery. David Marcus was drawn by the challenge of the poem's racy lines and has sought to make a translation that would be as true as possible to the original. This is an attempt at presenting the poem as Merriman might have written it were he composing in English today.
The volume also includes David Marcus's translation of poems by the celebrated modern Irish poet, Sean O'Riordain.
