After it was first used comercually in 1839, the camera offered the 19th century viewer images of a world most could never hope to see - from CHINA TO Egypt to the far reaches of the Antarctic. The earliest war photography is also included - from the US Civil war and other conflicts - images that shocked the world in their day.
The evolution of portrait photography, and the gradual acceptance of photograpy as an artistic medium is also fully explored.
