Sobolewicz was born in Poznan in 1923 , and was imprisoned in Auschwitz Birkenau ( his father was a member of the Polish Resistance and was killed at Auschwitz in 1942)
) , and he later was moved to other prison camps - Buchenwald, Flossenburg and Regensburg ( from where he was eventually liberated by the advancing American army in April 1945.
