A collection of Irish short stories that aren't monstrously depressing or twee. They're simple, luminous vignettes. A simple farmhand defends a sacred place. A miner returns to his hometown. A weirdo stumbles into the local pub in the middle of the night.
Like a carpenter or a stonemason, Daniel Corkery is a master builder of narrative. In each story, five to ten pages long, the plot doesn't proceed, but rather, unfolds. Reading it is like watching an artist first sketch an incomprehensible array of lines, but with each additional pencil stroke the picture becomes clearer. Or like telling a punchline out of context, and then setting up its lengthy joke.
The "revelatory" narrative has its up and down sides. Sometimes they feel like reading the middle chapter of a book instead of a complete story , other times, the thousand words were well worth that one picture.
