The case , the subject of a novel, a play /opera, and still in the public memory centers on a famous murder case in 1819, in which a 16 year old girl Ellie Hanley ( the Colleen Bawn or fair haired girl) was murdered by John Scanlan and Stephen Sullivan , and despite being defended in Limerick court by Daniel O'Connell, were hanged for the murders.
As well as a detailed narrative history of the case, it also includes the full account published by Richard Fittzgerald ( of Glin) first published in 1869.
The author, William McLysaght was a native of Cappamore, Co Limerick.
