In July 1927, government minister Kevin O'Higgins was assassinated near his home in Booterstown, Dublin. Appointed Minister for Home Affairs in 1922 at the height of the Irish civil war, he had advocated draconian measures to combat anti treaty activities , including signing off on the executions of 77 men , including one, ( Rory O'Connor) who had been his best man at his own wedding.
The complex legacy of Kevin O'Higgins encapsulates the bitter divisions of the Irish Civil War, and he remains one of the most compelling characters to emerge from the conflict.
