Of the two people in charge of a child who was neglected, abused, battered until dead one was a big mean man who treated a poor little woman so badly that she lost all sense not only of agency but morality. Women are weak-willed that way, I guess. For a much better account read Joyce Johnson's book on the subject; Johnson sees women as capable adults rather than perennial victims and so puts into stronger perspective what the true victim--the child herself--was forced to endure.
