Budapest, 1956. The Russians are invading and there are reports of massacres coming in from surrounding towns. In a school, 23-year-old Magda and her colleagues are discussing what they should do. They decide to flee and take the children with them, crossing the border into Austria. Magda leaves her beloved Sandor without knowing what happened to him and his comrades when they approached the Russian tanks. Her eventual marriage to a conventional middle-class Austrian fills her with a sense of exploding desperation, ending in her incarceration in the Steinhof mental hospital.
