When Bill Ward, the postman, spots a wild tabby cat in the village, he gets the stray checked out by Mr and Mrs Hope. When he realises she's pregnant, he offers her a temporary home. He's sympathetic to her plight as his own pedigree cat has just had kittens, and he doesn't expect anything in return for his help.
