Mary Aikenhead was the founder of the Sisters of Charity, a religious organisation of nuns who were among the first in Ireland to expand from the normal convent based role seen until that time. Following from the examples in France of the Vincent de Paul society, they ministered to the sick and the poor - initially in Cork - and later a rapidly expanding role throughout Ireland and elsewhere in the 19th century.
