Lacks the original dustjacket, but solid in lightly scuffed grey cloth, , dustdarkening to page block ends. Map of the Roman Empire to front and rear pastedowns. This edition takes the text of the 1854-5 edition as it's basis, and gives a shortened and concise single volume text - ewhich still runs to nearly a 1000 pages .
The Roam Empire here is taken to be the entire empire, East and West down to the fall of Constantinople in 1453 .
