Product Description
This book looks at the Fergus islands of Co Clare, Ireland lying on the estuary stretching from Clarecastle to Shannon and Kildysart. It examines the larger islands - their history, archaeology and folklore as well as the people who lived there. Their history is a microcosm of Co Clare's history - from the monastic foundations of the early saints to a medieval Augustinian Abbey, from the castles of the Irish chieftains through Cromwellian times to the era of English landlords. It also presents a current photographic record of the islands plus a selection of older photographs of past inhabitants.
First published in 2013, this is the 4th reprint, 2025 ( a testament to its popularity.
The father of one of the co -authors Dolores Meaney , a librarian with Clare County Council - was born on one of the islands in the estuary - Coney Island.
The colour photography in the book ( all of a very high quality), is by Jackie Elger.
Local history - of place, history, landscape and people - at its very best.
