The scene is an imaginary Pacific island -- British New Brabant. The part of it with which we are concerned is the Sultanate of Namua. Adviser to the Sultan and Commissioner for Tribal Territory is James Morland. The British colony at Namua cannot approve of the Sultan. Though charmed, they are also embarrassed by they never know what predicament he will put them in next. In the highlands of Namua, an insurrection is threatened. The Sultan assumes control of the operation against it. As imperturbable as ever, he takes action of which James Morland must disapprove. But he sees to it that Morland gets all the credit. Eric Linklater's story is surprising to the last -- as continuously as it is entertaining.
