As the title indicates, Balthasar’s focus is on the principal actors in the drama of the good, which is also the drama of the salvation: God and man. His first task is to rule out any suggestion that these protagonists are naturally in competition: The Creator is not limited or diminished by the creature, just as the creature’s being and freedom are not curtailed by its Creator. This vision of the Creator-creature relation sets the stage for the sketch of the human being to which the rest of the volume is devoted. Man, Balthasar shows here, is a being whose nature is marked by constitutive polarities that both open him to, and come to full expression in, the drama of salvation history culminating in Jesus.
