An account of the childhood and adolescence of an adopted son, and widely differing personalities of his adoptive parents.
The story though set largely in and around Dalkey, outside of Dublin, is universal and concerns itself primarily with the characters, rather than the place where the story unfolds. He describes his parents, his gentle Da and his sharp tongued mother, from the 1930's onwards, as they strive to 'better' him and his evential role as a civil servant in the Land Commission. Leonard was a highly successful author and playwright, perhaps best remembered for his play ( and subsequent film) Da', which grew out of this book.
