Product Description
Introspective, intense and poignant, this is the story of an upbringing that produces a young woman destined to inflict terrible revenge on her mother. It is available in English for the first time.
Irène Némirovsky is the acclaimed author of Suite Francaise and Fire In The Blood. The Wine Of Solitude is the most autobiographical of all Irène's novels. It explores the troubled relationships between Hélène, a young girl, her self-absorbed mother and her mother's lover. The backdrops include the Great War and the Russian Revolution.
“It is Némirovsky’s powers of social observation, the implacable eye for the nuances of human conduct, that make The Wine Of Solitude so memorable.” (The Financial Times).
Biography:
Irène Némirovsky and her family fled the Russian Revolution for France in 1918 where she became a bestselling novelist. She was prevented from publishing when the Germans occupied France so she moved to safety of the small village of Issy-l’Evêque, where she began writing Suite Francaise. She died in Auschwitz in 1942.
