Degas ( 1834-1917 ) was a member of the school of painting which emerged after 1850 from the Paris bourgeoisie. The revolutionary naturalism of his work, his many studies of subjects as diverse as ballet dancers, horses, women bathing and Parisian commerce and streetlife.
