The three Caffrey brothers are portraits of high sensitivity and insight. John works in a draper's shop in Belfast. Bob has a draper s shop of his own in Monabeg, a nearby village where he lives with his sister, Nelly, and D.J. is a gambling wastrel who, having shamed the family as a young man and then emigrated, is now back home, destitute, desperate and utterly transformed.
