Product Description
The period 1870-1922 was one of settlements - in land acts, labour law - attempted settlements - various Home Rule acts, and divisions - of the island, of nationalism and Unionism, and of the wider political relationships within these islands.
This book traces the background of these developments- the revoluion in land ownership, the undermining of the largely Protestant Ascendancy, and the wider democratization of local government and electoral reform. The divisions in Ireland became more apparent after 1912 , as many side sought to arm themselves in Ulster as a response to the Home Rule Bill, the onset of WW1 and the 1916 rising, and in what was to become the Free State after a bitter war of Independence and partition.
