A YOUNG fan of the Harry Potter books has alerted the publishers to an error in J K Rowling's latest story.
Laila Banjar, nine, noticed that in Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire, Crouch, a member of the Ministry of Magic, vanished on one page only to reappear a few pages on without explanation. Her mother, Tracey Banjar, of Welton, Somerset, wrote to the publishers, Bloomsbury, saying: "On page 503 in the ninth paragraph it says, 'Dumbledore, come! said Crouch angrily'. As Crouch is missing how can he be speaking to Dumbledore? Please can you explain this and tell us if it is a mistake or what?"
Bloomsbury replied, saying the sentence should have described Fudge, the Minister for Magic, calling to Professor Dumbledore, Headmaster of Hogwarts School, and not Crouch. Bloomsbury said: "We have forwarded your e-mail to the editorial department. Yes, you are right about the error. Please accept our apologies for this. Bloomsbury prides itself on its high editorial standard. We are very upset that this error went unnoticed until after printing."
Laila said yesterday: "I was really surprised when I spotted the mistake and I jumped for joy when I knew I was right." Her mother added: "Laila has always loved reading. If it's a book she likes she will read it over and over again, which is why she spotted this mistake."
Bloomsbury said the error was confined to the first print run of a million copies. A spokesman said: "It was spotted quite quickly and corrected in subsequent editions. This girl did very well to spot it."
The summer holidays are dragging on and Harry Potter can't wait for the start of the school year. It is his fourth year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and there are spells to be learnt and (unluckily) Potions and Divination lessons to be attended.
