Product Description
A 1922 reprint (originally published in a smaller versionin 1904) of Timothy O'Neill Lane's magnum opus - his English to Irish Dictionary ( Foclóir Béarla Gaeilge - not vice versa) published by Talbot Press, Dublin 1922. Titled here as a ' new edition, thoroughly revised and greatly enlarged' ( and it is a large and heavy edition) ( This edition is approximately twice the size of the 1904 edition)
Condition - lacks what I'm assuming was the original dustjacket -(although I have never seen a coipy with a dustjacket, I'm assuming it had one) solid in green clothwith titles in gilt effect lettering to spine. Usual dustdarkeing to page block. No inscriptions noted, no damage noted internally. Black endpapers to front and rear. The main issue is that the boards, while holding, are starting to crack/loosen, and are weakened both front and rear. ( The weight of the page block over the last century didnt help) - see photos.
Lane used the OED as his basis for the English , and his own knowledge of Irish as the basis for his translations ( all of which are in the seanchló - cló Ceilteach) throughout.
The extraordinary figure of Timothy O'Neill Lane - the man who wrote the first English-Irish Dictionary - of Templeglantine and Brosna was remembered 100 years after his death with special ceremonies in both places in 2015
O'Neill Lane was born in Gurteen, Templeglantine, in 1852 where he attended the local primary he would later come to teach in.
Emigrating to England in his adult years he went on to work as a journalist for The Times of London and as a correspondent with English newspapers based in Paris for a time.
However, he would leave the French language behind to return to the home in West Limerick to concentrate on the languages he was reared bilingually with - English and Irish. Timothy O'Neill Lane is principally rememberd, of course, for his incredible understanding of language. It was a gift that saw him embark on the compilation of his first dictionary in 1883.
It was while staying with his Kelly cousins in Tournafulla in the year of his death (1916) that he completed his masterwork of thsi expanded Lane's Larger English-Irish Dictionary.
