Product Description
Vincent Power examines the unique Irish phenomenon of the showbands - The Royal, the tragic Miami, Melody Aces, The Freshmen, Clipper Carlton, the Cadets - who , surprisingly to modern eyes and ears, epitomised glamour and showbusiness in the 1960's across Ireland, in a network of dancehalls and show venues, many in smaller rural towns.
It is also a social history of the period, and the role that dancehalls played in a rather stifling society for young people. Power interviewed many of those who were in the bands, as well as venue owners and fans.
This is the first edition, in a larger format paperback, 1990, published by Kildanore Press, Dublin. Illustrated with b&w photographs.
