Edward Gorey's CATEGORY was first published by Gotham Book Mart, New York in 1973. . One of Gorey's most beloved books, CATEGORY collects a series of fifty cat vignettes, originally created by the artist as accompaniments to a limited edition of his earlier book Amphigorey.
All content is by way of colour drawings, there is no text. Each drwing is numbered, some in roman numerals, some involving the cat itself, others with the number incorporated into the artwork itself.
This edition is unsigned, although it includes the 'signature page' - 100 copies were signed and numbered using the same sheets, as well as 26 signed and lettered copies) .
Gotham Book Mart was a famous New York bookshop and associated publisher that closed in 2007, it had a long asdsociation with Gorey, publishing a number of his limited editions.
Condition - internally good, the blank back cover shows three marks, two white which look like scorch marks, (?) and another which is an oil or faded ink mark.
the gap in the title categor y is intentional both as a pun on Gorey , and teh fact a cat has stolen the letters ( thus with the elevated e also, in the glued label to eth front ( there is no other title to spine or cover, giving it the look of a handmade art book, which in one sense it was)
