Product Description
Enda Finnan examins the physical and social development of the Cabra /Navan Road district from the 18th to the 20th century.
Tracing the landscape of the area back to the ancient route from the Ford of the Hurdles to Tara, by the 18th century the area was crossed by established routes to Ireland’s interior. As the 18th century city expanded, modern roads were run through the area including the creation of a new thoroughfare, the Great Navan Road. A social history of Ireland in the 19th and 20th century can be traced along the road as, in the decades after Catholic emancipation, it became part of Ireland’s leading export industry of the era – the cattle trade and also to new educational institutions and social services, which were at first harbingers of a new Ireland and later also illustrative of much of its accompanying sun and shade.
