The Blasket Islands lie off Slea Head, county Kerry. Great Blasket Island, now uninhabited the largest, was inhabited for thousands of years by a small Gaelic-speaking fishing community. In 1953 the entire population was moved to the mainland. This isolated group had produced seven acclaimed authors and twenty books of as Gaeilge and in English.
