This takes up where the first book ( I Knock at the Door) left off. Born in the backstreets of Dublin , in poverty, and with a serious eye condition as a child, in his late teens O'casey worked as a manual labourer on the roads and in Dublin docks, and he spent his evenings working with the Gaelic league and Sinn Féin. He became deeply involved in revolutionary politics, becoming Secretary of the Irish Citizen Army, and a founder member of the Irish Labour Party. His first published work was in 1907, and his own life ( and the turmoil of Dublin at the time is reflected in much of his work. His biography is full of what he saw around him - he includes snatches from songs and poetry, as well as catching the language of Dublin throughout.
