Larry, an orphan, grows up in Louisiana on Cindy Lou, a sugar and tobacco plantation, by the Mississippi River. It's 1897, the golden age of steamboats is over but Larry inherits his grandfather’s love of the river and boats.
Parkinson Keyes takes the reader on a journey from the deep south in 1897 to the second world war, at the end of which Larry meets his father’s relatives in France, and then back to Cindy Lou with his young wife.
