Pádraic Ó Conaire (1882–1928) was an Irish writer and journalist who is considered the first author to incorporate modernist themes into Irish-language writing. Although he was born in Galway, Pádraic Ó Conaire moved to London in 1899, where he shortly became involved with the Gaelic League. Throughout his career, Pádraic Ó Conaire wrote 26 books, 473 stories, 237 essays, and six plays. After moving back to Ireland in 1914, he continued writing while engaging in part-time teaching work. His novel Deoraíocht, published in 1910 and widely considered his masterpiece, has been labelled the earliest example of modernist fiction in Irish. Shifting between London and Galway, it depicts the joys and struggles of the down and out, and the flotsam and jetsam of an uncaring society. Unlike many writers of his era, his work is notable in its honest portrayal of urban life, and its avoidance of romanticising rural life.
