I was lucky enough to live for almost a hundred years. During this time, more discoveries have been made about our oceans than at any other time in human history. Oceanography has revealed wonders of nature that the child of the '30s could never have imagined... And in the meantime, we have produced such profound transformations in the ocean that, in the next hundred years, we will witness either a mass extinction of marine life or a spectacular comeback.
I won't get to the end of this story, but after a lifetime of exploring our planet, I remain convinced that as people learn to appreciate and understand nature, so do the hopes that we will save it – and that we will also save ourselves.
